16th July Newspaper Headlines from Nigeria

Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. No fewer than 23 Nigerian soldiers are yet to be accounted for after Boko Haram insurgents ambushed a military convoy at Boboshe village in Bama local government area of Borno. Five officers, 18 soldiers and 8 trucks were declared missing after the attack which occurred early on Saturday. The report claims the insurgents in their hundreds ambushed the troops while they were moving into the village.

2. France have won the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted by Russia. The tournament which ended on Sunday, saw France beating Luka Modric-led Croatia 4-2 to win the World Cup for the second time.

3. National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has charged Nigerians who believe in democracy and rule of law not to be deterred by “the obvious vote robbery in Ekiti State on Saturday because it would not stand the test of the almighty”. Prince Secondus said that Justice had the stamina to go all the way to the destination while injustice cannot, as it terminates midway to the race.

4. The presidency has mocked Governor Ayodele Fayose and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the outcome of the Ekiti governorship election. An article titled ‘Fayose: In The End, A High-Powered Nothing’ authored by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media, said the electorate spoke through their votes.

5. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has threatened to pick up Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State after his failure to install his preferred candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola as the next governor. The EFCC said in a tweet that with Fayose’s tenure ending in less than three months, he will lose his immunity and should begin to prepare to visit the commission.

6. The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected Saturday’s governorship election results in Ekiti State. It described the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission as a daylight robbery. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, alleged that the APC and INEC colluded to deny Kolapo victory. He said that the party would set up a committee to collate the votes it garnered in the election and also look at the alleged robbery perpetrated by the APC.

7. The family of Angela Igwetu, a youth corps member who was shot by a police officer on the eve of her passing out parade, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibraham Idris, demanding justice against Garki General Hospital. In the petition, the family told the police authorities to go after the hospital, insisting that the autopsy report faulted the claims made by the hospital. The family claimed that the hospital refused to treat Angela until a cash deposit of N50,000 was made.

8. An officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, crushed two of his colleagues to death in a tragic accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Saturday. The report says the two victims, who were in a Toyota Camry with the number plate, YLA 121BJ, were at a checkpoint when they were crushed by their colleague, who drove a Toyota Avalon, with number plate, YAB 366 JY. The three officials were reportedly attached to the Seme Border Command in Lagos.

9. Coalition of observer groups and Civil Society Organisations, that monitored the Ekiti governorship elections on Saturday, have rejected the emergence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Kayode Fayemi, as the winner of the polls. In a press statement signed by Comrade Haruna Farouk and Nze Adachi Okoro, the group said the election does not reflect what they saw on ground. The coalition also promised to release its findings on Wednesday, July 18, which will include details of the malpractices that marred the election.

10. Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, to clear the air over the allegations of certificate forgery against her and settle the facts of the case once and for all. The organization said this in a statement on Sunday by its deputy director, Timothy Adewale noting that clarifying the allegations of certificate forgery would show a commitment to doing the right thing as a public official. He said that failure to respond appropriately would amount to a betrayal of trust and lead to public anger.
