1. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the 27 chairmanship seats, in the just concluded Local Government elections in Imo State. This was confirmed by the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Ethelbert Ebebuchi, on Sunday in Owerri.
2. The Metropolitan Bishop of the Calabar Archdiocese, His Grace, Most, Rev. Joseph Ekuwem has given reasons President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek re-election. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the Cleric lamented the senseless killing that cut across Nigeria, saying that if Buhari cannot stop the killings, then he should forget recontesting in 2019.
3. The campaign office of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has refuted speculations that the presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was set to dump the party. The rebuttal described the claims as a malicious attempt to confuse the public about the aspiration of Atiku ahead of the forthcoming presidential primary election of the PDP.
4. Two Special Assistants to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and over 5,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC. The two governor’s aides are the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Community Development, Mr. Lucky Arumare; and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilisation, Mrs. Uyoyou Edhekpo.
5. Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, has given reason he is willing to rebuild the demolished Yinka Ayefele’s Music House. He said the decision was to ensure his political enemies do not use the incident to attack his administration.
6. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Nigeria Police to come out clear on the ‘fact-finding’ invitation, extended to former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP said while it was not against any lawful step by the police in carrying out its duties, “the police must ensure that it is not being used by the All Progressive Congress (APC) in its desperate quest to muzzle free speech and subjugate Nigerians, particularly the opposition, ahead of the 2019 general election.”
7. Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has re-echoed his determination to replace the senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani. Addressing party stakeholders at Kaduna North Local Government Area, El-Rufai declared that he has his own candidate for the senatorial seat, stating that Shehu Sani had taken Abuja water and had since started misbehaving.
8. Abdullahi Danbaba, the Special Assistant on non-governmental affairs to Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has resigned his appointment. Danbaba announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Gov. Ahmed through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). His resignation was due to extensive and heart-to-heart consultation with the people of his constituency, coupled with the issue created by the recent political re-alignment in the state and the country at large.
9. A coalition of Niger Delta militants has threatened fresh bombings in the region if the country is not restructured. A statement signed by the leader of the Niger Delta Watchdogs, Mr John Duku, in Uyo on at the weekend noted that the threat became necessary following alleged anti-democratic actions by the federal government.
10. Pope Francis has further frowned on clergy’s involvement in sex abuse scandals, saying they are an “open wound” that must be treated with “firm and decisive” action. The Pope said this at the Marian Shrine of Knock on Sunday, his second day in Ireland.
