5 dead after three hours of downpour on Sunday
– Dead bodies have been retrieved from flood waters at different parts of the capital following Sunday’s heavy rains
– A NADMO-led search-and-rescue operation are going round the country in search of more dead bodies
April 14, 2019’s heavy downpour in Accra and other parts of the country have killed about five persons according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The NADMO in an interview with Citi News and Joy News said it has retrieved four bodies from flood waters at Adjei-Kojo, a suburb of Accra.
Also a six-year-old child was found dead at Sowutuom during the rain.
“At Circle Odorna, two people drowned and one body has been found. It is actually about 5 people that are confirmed dead. Where the Army pickup fell, another body was found aside the three people in the bucket of the pickup,” the PRO of NADMO, told Citi News.
A NADMO-led search-and-rescue operation began around 9 pm Sunday night and continued until the bodies were recovered around 2 am Monday morning.
The Mayor of Tema, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, has been to the scene of some of the incidents and was at the scene when the bodies were retrieved.
Sunday’s rains left many areas in Accra flooded.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) issued an earlier alert over the rains indicating that “a rainstorm at the southern portions of Togo is forecast to affect places in the southern half of the country.”
The rainstorm according to the Agency affected areas such as Kpetoe, Akatsi, Ho, Kpandu and its environs in the Volta Region.
In the Eastern Region, areas such as Koforidua, Begoro and Nkawkaw were also affected.
Dodowa, Amasama, Afienya and many areas in Accra also experienced the downpour.
Exactly a week ago on April 7, heavy rains left five persons dead in Accra, raising concerns over the preparedness of the city for the 2019 rainy season.
