Bawumia meets Deputy UN Secretary General

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, 11 July 2018, met with the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Mrs Amina J. Mohammed, to discuss the leadership role that Ghana is providing on several initiatives that harness data revolution for sustainable development.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the meeting of Board members of the UN’s Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD), which took place in New York, United States of America from 10 – 11 July 2018.

According to Dr Bawumia, the Africa Regional Data Cube, is one such initiative where Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania are harnessing Earth observation and satellite technology with the assistance of partners such as NASA and Group on Earth Observations (GEO) to address food security and issues relating to agriculture, deforestation, illegal mining (Galamsey) and water access.

The satellite maps, he said, “will allow us to look at developments over the last 20 years as well as provide monthly updates going forward.”
